Pastes & Gels

Pastes and gels for EEG, ECG and sleep studies.

Electrode pastes and gels for skin preparation are used to reduce impedance with skin contact and as conductive and adhesive pastes for attaching electrodes in routine EEG, long-term EEG, long-term video EEG, epilepsy EEG and sleep EEG / PSG.

Have you noticed that your usual electrode cream is no longer available and are looking for alternatives? Well look no further! CNSac is pleased to offer lic2®. Compared to conventional electrode creams, lic2® has significantly improved electrode impedance and is more resistant to body temperature and sweat.

The medical gels and pastes for EEG, ECG, sleep diagnostics and EP examinations are used for three main purposes: Skin preparation, sticking the electrodes and conducting the signal.

Skin preparation

Dead skin cells, dirt, sweat, and grease cause high transition impedance between the skin and the electrode, sometimes up to several megohms (M Ω). It is essential to reduce this junction impedance for optimal measurement. An impedance below 5 kiloOhm (5 k Ω) is recommended by AASM. It is therefore necessary to clean the skin to achieve stable electrical contact and low transition impedance. A home preparation gel such as Nuprep is used to clean skin and achieve optimal impedances. For very oily skin, alcohol wipes (e.g. isopropanol) can also be used to degrease the skin.

Adhering & Conducting

For stable and reliable conduction, electrodes (e.g. Gold Cup electrodes) should be fixed after skin cleansing. Adhesive/conductive pastes or gels (such as Lic2 , EC2 and Ten20) are used for this purpose. These have different thicknesses and are applied depending on the type of examination (routine or long-term derivation) and electrode (gold, Ag/AgCl cup electrodes or EEG system caps).

Pastes and gels for skin preparation.

By default, the Nuprep is recommended for skin preparation. The gel is also recommended for sensitive skin because no skin irritation occurs during application. Nuprep does not contain latex, either as an ingredient or in packaging. In addition, latex-free gloves are used in production to eliminate contamination. Nuprep is used to clean the skin, reduce impedances and improve conduction in the following examinations:

  • EEG examinations
  • Sleep diagnostics and sleep screening
  • Long-term ECG and short-time ECG
  • Evoked potential (EP) examination
  • Cardiac catheter monitoring
  • ECG telemetry
  • Cardiac stress test
  • Cardiac rehabilitation monitoring
  • Intraoperative monitoring

Other skin preparation gels such as Everi and Skin-Pure are also used in EEG, EMG, EP, ECG and sleep studies.

Adhesive and conductive paste for EEG examination and sleep diagnostics

Adhesive and conductive pastes are used to attach electrodes (e.g. gold cup electrodes , silver-silver chloride cup electrodes(Ag/AgCl cup electrodes) or silver cup electrodes) during routine and long-term leads:

  • Electroencephalogram (EEG)
  • Electroneurography (ENG)
  • Brain Mapping
  • Evoked potential (EP) testing
  • Neurofeedback
  • Sleep diagnostics and sleep screening (PG and PSG)
  • Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT)

Lic2 Electrode Cream

Lic2 Electrode Cream is a newly developed electrode cream for routine EEG, long-term EEG and sleep EEG. Get familiar with our new innovative electrode cream lic2® (low impedance cream lic2®)

Properties of Lic2 Electrode Cream:

  • Self-adhesive
  • Easy to remove
  • Significant improvement of electrode impedance (comparison of 34 PSG measurements; number of samples N=132, T-test with p<0.05)

Faster application due to preformed electrode pads
Also for long-term EEG

Other adhesive conductive pastes such as Ten20 is water soluble and can be easily removed after application. The EC2 electrode conduction cream, long-term EEG conductions and sleep EEG used. Meanwhile, for EEG hoods (system caps and comby caps), special gels such as ECI electrode gel have been developed, which are effective in reducing skin resistance and electrode artifacts. Signa Gel (saline electrode gel from Parker) and Elefix (adhesive conductive paste from Nihon Kohden) are other gels/pastes for use during EP, EMG, EEG, defibrillation and biofeedback examinations.
